Ativan is a type of benzodiazepine that serves as a sedative or hypnotic, an anxiolytic, an amnesic, an anticonvulsant, and a muscle relaxant.
It is used for the treatment of anxiety disorder, insomnia, acute seizures, and epilepsy.
Ativan may come in the form of tablets or injectable solutions. Generic Ativan tablets come in 0.5 mg, 1 mg or 2 mg doses. The injectable solution typically comes in 1 ml ampoules that contain about 2 to 4 mg of Ativan.
Ativan may be administered orally or injected. When orally administered, Ativan can take effect upon intake and can peak in about 90 to 120 minutes, 10 minutes after intravenous injection and up to 60 minutes after intramuscular injection. The effects of Ativan can last from 6 to 12 hours.
Ativan should be taken exactly as prescribed. In the event that you miss a dose of Ativan, it is imperative that you take a dose immediately unless the next dose is already scheduled, in which case it is not advised to take more than one dose at the same time.
Before taking Ativan, you should tell the prescribing physician if you have a medical history of any of the following conditions:
glaucoma, asthma, emphysemas, bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder or other breathing problems, liver or kidney disease, a history of depression or suicidal attempts, and a history of alcohol or drug abuse. If you are suffering from any of these conditions, your intake of Ativan should be carefully monitored.
If you are prescribed with Ativan, you also have to let your doctor know if you are taking any other types of medication to determine if it will cause any drug interactions.
Ativan is known to interact with barbiturates, MAO inhibitors, antidepressants, narcotic pain relievers, and medications used to treat psychiatric disorders. It is also important to avoid medications that cause drowsiness when taking Ativan as it can significantly worsen the side effects of the drug.
It is important to follow the prescribed dosage of Ativan to fully experience its effects.
Ativan is know to be one of the best treatments of anxiety disorder, as it is fast-acting and is useful in the treatment of the symptoms of anxiety attacks. If taken for the short-term treatment of insomnia, you should take Ativan at least an hour before sleeping.
Ativan is also given as a pre-medication to patients before they are given a general anesthetic. It is typically given 90 to 120 minutes before any surgical procedure. The dosage for Ativan may vary, depending on the condition and the age of the patient.
