It is normal to feel worried and scared whenever you are facing a stressful situation. Anxiety is your body’s normal response to a danger, an alarm that automatically goes off when you feel threatened. Signs and symptoms
If you constantly feel worried, stressed, and hyped up with your school, work, and family responsibilities, there is a big chance that you are a victim of an anxiety disorder. Being plagued by irrational fears that you cannot shake off will eventually lead you to full-blown panic attacks.
Anxiety attacks refer to episodes of intense fear or panic. They usually occur without warning. Sometimes, scheduled events can also trigger anxiety attacks but in most cases, they usually come unexpectedly.
An anxiety attack usually last between ten minutes to half an hour. However, during the attack, you will feel intense fear and terror that will make you feel as if you are about to die. The physical symptoms of a panic attack can be so frightening that most people believe they are having a heart attack instead of an anxiety attack.
A panic attack due to an anxiety disorder include different emotional and physical symptoms. During a panic attack, the emotional symptoms that you will experience are an overwhelming feeling of terror, , and choking sensations. Hot flashes, chills, chest pain, heart palpitations hyperventilation, nausea, and trembling or shaking are the physical signs of panic attacks.
Types of anxiety disorders
The five major types of anxiety disorders include obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is identified by having unwanted behaviors and thoughts that seem impossible to control. If you have this disorder, you may be troubled with various obsessions such as worrying that you forgot to lock your door. You may also experience uncontrollable compulsions such as cleaning your hands repeatedly.
Panic disorder is associated with repetitive episodes of unexpected panic attacks. Sometimes, it is also accompanied with the fear of being caught in a place where no one can help you during the sudden onset of panic attacks.
Post-traumatic stress disorder occurs after a life-threatening or traumatic event. It is usually accompanied with symptoms such as recurring nightmares and flashbacks about traumatic events, becoming easily startled, and avoiding particular situations that remind you of the event.
Social anxiety disorder is a feeling of fear from being humiliated in public and being seen negative by others. This disorder could also be known as social phobia.
Lastly, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is associated with constant fears and worries that affect your performance in your day-to-day activities. It will make you have persistent feelings that something bad is about to happen. If you have GAD, you will feel anxious most of the time without knowing why you are feeling that way. Other symptoms include stomach problems, restlessness, fatigue, and insomnia.
